Many Crete itineraries mention Preveli Beach but miss the real spectacle a few kilometers earlier: Kourtaliotiko Gorge and its icy waterfall hidden inside the rock.
A 300-meter giant in southern Crete
In Rethymno, Kourtaliotiko Gorge rises more than 300 meters around the road. Wind channeled through rock makes a deep rhythmic sound; the name comes from kourtala, Greek for clapping.

Cold springs emerge directly from stone, form hidden falls and feed the river that reaches Preveli Beach. This is raw Cretan ecotourism rather than a polished attraction.
Driving there and choosing a base
| Origin | Distance | Estimated time |
|---|---|---|
| Rethymno | 25 km | 35 min |
| Chania | 85 km | 1 hr 30 min |
| Heraklion, our base | 110 km | 1 hr 45 min |
Do not repeat our mistake. The nighttime return to Heraklion was stressful, with dark tourist-unfriendly roads and local drivers moving at rally pace. Rethymno or Plakias is a better base.
Parking requires strategy
Free roadside pullouts near viewpoints have high turnover but fill quickly. We arrived late and used the paid lot uphill.

The paid option adds a walk along an unprotected road edge and another uphill stretch after climbing out of the gorge.
Stairs and Agios Nikolaos Chapel
Stone steps descend into the canyon in about 15–20 minutes. Halfway, tiny Agios Nikolaos Chapel sits peacefully beneath enormous walls.

Steps are irregular and the return requires fitness. Midday crowds gather near the chapel, but fewer people continue through the river to the main waterfall.
The secret waterfall inside the rock
To reach the most beautiful point, where water drops inside an opening resembling a cave, you must enter the river.

The water is freezing, even in September. Persist for a few minutes and your body adjusts. We remained for about an hour before continuing to Preveli.
Nearby farms and wineries sell local wine and fresh olive oil. More adventurous visitors can trek two or three hours in the river to its mouth at Preveli.
What to bring in September
There are no shops or kiosks below.

- UV clothing, sunscreen and a hat for exposed stairs.
- More water than you expect to need.
- Hiking shoes or adventure sandals with grip; mossy river rocks are slippery.
- Swimwear under your clothes because the cave will tempt you in.
- Light snacks for the climb back.
Is Kourtaliotiko Gorge worth it?
Yes, for travelers seeking genuine ecotourism who accept cold water and a steep return. Looking upward from the canyon floor is an experience photographs cannot fully translate. Continue directly to Preveli afterward for sunset among the palms.
