At Preveli, the journey is part of the reward. Forget easy access and resort infrastructure: this is a dramatic Cretan landscape for travelers willing to tackle a rocky path.
The Megalopotamos River makes Preveli unique
The Megalopotamos River cuts through the gorge and reaches the sea on Preveli’s sand. Native palms form a green corridor that looks almost deliberately planted.

The river was low in September, letting us walk deep into the corridor. Its green, clear and refreshing water created scenery unlike anything we had seen.
Getting there takes planning
We came from our Heraklion base after hiking Kourtaliotiko Gorge.
| Route | Distance | Estimated time |
|---|---|---|
| Heraklion to Preveli | 115 km | 1 hr 45 min |
| Kourtaliotiko Gorge to Preveli | 6 km | 12 min |
The road feels like an Indiana Jones set: narrow gorge sections allow one car at a time and demand full attention. Parking, a hotel and a restaurant sit above the coast.

The actual beach lies to the right and requires a rocky path across the headland. Wear proper footwear. As we often say, a beach that is too easy is not really our kind of beach.
Facilities and accessibility
There were no umbrellas, kiosks or vendors on the sand during our September visit.

Bring water, snacks and sunscreen. Everything carried down must come back up the rocky trail under the sun. Unfortunately, the uneven terrain makes this beach unsuitable for reduced mobility and strollers.
Who will enjoy this adventure?
Preveli is not for travelers wanting shade, table service and a lounger. It rewards an adventurous spirit, reasonable fitness and healthy knees. Exotic landscapes and scenic walking are the entire point.

Sunset and verdict
We spent about two hours around the river mouth and beach, then left before complete darkness. Driving that cliff road at night would have been madness. Sunset closed the day perfectly.

Every step and bend was worthwhile. Preveli went directly into our top five must-do experiences in Crete.
