Sandbanks Provincial Park feels remarkably close to a real beach without leaving Ontario. From Montreal it works as a short trip, but definitely not as a day trip.

Where to stay: three realistic choices

Montreal to Sandbanks is about 380 km, roughly four hours. Stay at least one or two nights or the drive overwhelms the experience.

Belleville: full city convenience

We stayed at Holiday Inn on our first visit. Belleville offers supermarkets, malls, late restaurants, standard-hotel breakfast and a pool, good for families who value predictability.

Our first Sandbanks visit in 2021

The drawback is the 35 km, 40-minute drive to the park each way.

Wellington: small-town charm

In 2025, a Wellington Airbnb gave us a simpler and more charming base only 15 km, or 20 minutes, away.

The only Wellington bar we found open after 6 pm

Historic architecture, artisan coffee and quiet lakefront walks suit couples. However, the village nearly sleeps after 6 pm. Without food planning or a reservation, choices disappear.

Camping inside Sandbanks

More than 500 campsites, including Outlet River and Woodlands, offer zero commute, lower prices and immersion. Summer sites can sell out as soon as booking opens five months ahead. Shared bathrooms, insects and equipment make this unsuitable for everyone.

Does it really feel like a beach?

The enormous lake creates small waves and a breeze, minus the smell of salt. July and August water averages 20–21°C, sometimes reaching 24°C on very hot days.

South Beach at Sandbanks

Paddleboarding, kayaking, swimming and trails fill a day. The famous dunes were not our highlight because the lake smelled swampy there. South Beach felt quieter on our latest visit.

Rules that shape the trip

  1. Day-use permits open five days ahead; reserve immediately for busy summer dates.
  2. Hotels and Airbnbs need around four months of planning; campsites can require five or six.
  3. Bring chairs, shade, food and drinks.
  4. Alcohol is prohibited on beaches and common areas, permitted only at registered campsites.
  5. Repellent is essential when the breeze fades near sunset.

Add Prince Edward County wineries

Two or three nights leave room for local wineries. Limestone soil supports notable Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Three Dog Winery

At Three Dog Winery, we spent a sunny afternoon with friends, cheese, house wine and wood-fired pizza. Its relaxed, dog-friendly patio near Picton made an excellent post-beach stop.

When to go, price and verdict

July and August offer the best swimming. June and September are usually cold. A 2026 daily vehicle permit costs roughly CAD $18–$21 through Ontario Parks.

We recommend one visit for anyone missing the coast. Two trips were enough for us, but Sandbanks remains one of the broadest, most sea-like lakes we have experienced in Canada.
