Flowerpot Island's rock pillars, trails and clear water make it one of Tobermory's strongest excursions. We took Blue Heron's drop-off cruise.

In July 2023, I took the Flowerpot Island Drop-Off Cruise from Tobermory with Blue Heron Cruises. The combination of glass-clear water, shipwrecks and time to hike made it one of my summer highlights in Canada.

The island and its geology

Flowerpot Island belongs to Fathom Five National Marine Park in Ontario. Waves and erosion sculpted tall rock pillars shaped like flowerpots from the softer shoreline.

Flowerpot rock formation

The formations will continue changing, which makes them both impressive and geologically temporary.

Reaching the harbor and parking

Cruises depart from Tobermory. Summer traffic is heavy, and parking near the harbor is limited and paid. Arrive well before check-in so parking does not make you miss the boat.

Tobermory harbor area

Confirm the operator’s exact terminal because different companies use different docks.

Where to stay

Tobermory has motels, cabins, campgrounds and rentals, but capacity is limited. Book early in summer. Cyprus Lake Campground is an excellent base for travellers also visiting Bruce Peninsula National Park.

Buying tickets

Choose between a cruise that only passes the island and a drop-off option that lets you disembark and hike. For us, landing was essential; viewing the rock pillars from a boat alone would have felt incomplete.

Operators

Blue Heron Cruises and Bruce Anchor Cruises both operate popular routes. Compare vessel type, glass-bottom viewing, island time, departure dock, parking arrangements and cancellation policy.

Prices

Prices change each season and may exclude Parks Canada fees or parking. Check the operator and Parks Canada directly. Reserve early for weekends, then confirm what happens if weather cancels sailing.

Cruising Georgian Bay

The water around Tobermory is so clear that shallow shipwrecks can be seen from the boat. A glass-bottom vessel improves visibility when conditions cooperate.

Shipwreck beneath clear water

The cruise then crosses toward Flowerpot Island, with commentary about the marine park and local history.

Landing and island route

After disembarking, trails connect the dock, small and large flowerpots, caves, picnic areas and lighthouse station. Select a return boat that provides enough time for your planned walk.

Trail on Flowerpot Island

The shoreline is rocky and the water remains cold. Wear stable shoes rather than flip-flops and do not rely on swimming as the main activity.

Wildlife

Birds, snakes and small mammals live on the island. Observe without feeding or approaching them, and carry all waste back.

What to bring

  • Water and food.
  • Hiking shoes.
  • Sun and wind protection.
  • A warm layer for the boat.
  • Motion-sickness medication if needed.
  • Your reservation and Parks Canada information offline.

Blue Heron strengths

Equipment and service earned five stars. Booking was straightforward, safety procedures were clear and the operation felt professional. The activity is scenic rather than highly adventurous, which explains the three-star adrenaline score.

Verdict

Flowerpot Island is worth visiting, especially with a drop-off cruise. The four-star overall rating reflects good value, excellent organization and a destination that rewards hiking rather than a quick photo from the water.

If your Tobermory schedule allows only one paid excursion, this is a strong choice. Book enough island time, arrive early and prepare for cold Georgian Bay weather even on a warm day.
