In Milos, we rented our own small boat for almost eight hours without a boating license. It became the highlight of our Greek-island trip.
Our private day on the water in Milos
Greek rules allow certain low-powered boats to be rented without a formal boating licence. In Milos, Alice and I hired a small boat for almost eight hours, visited several beaches and controlled our own pace. It became the highlight of our trip.
This freedom exists within clear limits. The operator defines a permitted navigation area based on the boat, forecast and local rules.
Why September worked so well
We went in the second week of September. Days were warm and dry, the sea was comfortable and the island was quieter than in July or August. Services were still operating, but boats and beaches had better availability.

Wind is the deciding factor in the Cyclades. Never treat a reservation as permission to ignore the day’s conditions.
Our route from Fyriplaka
We checked in around 10 a.m. at a small bay near Fyriplaka on the south coast. After training, we followed the coast west toward Kleftiko, then east toward Gerakas, before returning to Fyriplaka.

The exact permitted route can change. Caves, exposed capes and the north side may be prohibited depending on wind.
What the eight-hour package provides
Our boat had a sun canopy, ladder, storage, cooler and the required safety equipment. Space is limited, but the boat was comfortable for a couple and simple to operate after the briefing.

Check-in and training
The operator explained steering, throttle, anchoring, fuel, the navigation zone and emergency contact procedure. We completed a short supervised practice before leaving.

Take this training seriously. A license-free boat is still a powered vessel, and the sea changes quickly.
Wind and scheduling
Book early in the trip rather than on your final day. That leaves room to reschedule if the Meltemi or another strong wind makes navigation unsafe.
Confirm the forecast with the operator, not only a weather app. Local companies understand which coastline remains protected under each wind direction.
Saving money without losing the experience
- Book directly and compare the complete price.
- Ask whether fuel is included or calculated after return.
- Bring water, snacks and a cooler if permitted.
- Share the boat with another couple only if everyone agrees on pace and swimming stops.
- Avoid unnecessary premium extras; privacy and route freedom are already the luxury.
Company, price and conditions
Prices vary by boat, season and duration. Confirm the deposit, fuel policy, insurance excess, cancellation terms and maximum navigation area in writing.

The lowest quote is not necessarily best. Equipment condition, clear training and reliable emergency support matter more than saving a small amount.
Value for money
A group boat tour may cost less per person, but it follows fixed stops and schedules. Our private rental let us remain wherever we liked, swim without a crowd and change plans along the way.

For a couple, the total can feel expensive. Compared with a private skippered charter, however, it provides remarkable freedom for the price.
Verdict
Absolutely worth it. The day demanded responsibility and attention to wind, but it gave us a version of Milos that roads cannot reveal.
Choose a reputable operator, respect the navigation boundaries and never pressure the company to release a boat in unsafe weather. Do that, and a license-free rental can become the most memorable day of a Greek-island itinerary.
