Albufeira gets the attention, but Olhão surprised us with barrier islands, traditional markets, fewer crowds, lower prices and a life still governed by the tides.
Olhão: nature and authenticity in Ria Formosa
Albufeira and Lagos make excellent Algarve bases, but travelers wanting raw nature, gentler prices and fewer crowds should reserve a day for Olhão. Its barrier islands, traditional markets and fishing culture reveal a coast many visitors miss.

We exchanged the obvious route for a shared boat journey through Ria Formosa and found one of our most authentic Algarve days.
Getting to Olhão
We drove from Lagos via the A22.
| Origin | Distance | Approximate time |
|---|---|---|
| Lagos | 90 km | 1 hr 5 min |
| Albufeira | 45 km | 40 min |
| Faro | 10 km | 15 min |
| Vilamoura | 30 km | 30 min |
Regional trains are a cheap alternative and connect the main towns with Olhão station.
Our one-day itinerary
We left Lagos after breakfast without rushing and stopped at viewpoints along the road for morning photographs. At about 11 am, we reached Olhão marina and booked the next shared boat around the barrier islands.

Olhão works better by day, so on the return we stopped in Albufeira, about 40 minutes away, for sunset at Praia do Forte and dinner at Sal Forte before continuing to Lagos.

Our Ria Formosa boat experience
The shared two-hour tour cost about €25 per person, excellent value for the region. Olhão marina was organized and easy to use.
The inlets and oyster farms reminded us of Rio Grande do Norte in Brazil. Most passengers were British and German travelers over 60, and the commentary was in English. Portuguese-language groups can be harder to find, so ask in advance if language matters. We boarded within an hour without a reservation.
Bring your own snacks and water because nothing was served aboard.
Our island stops
Culatra Island
Car-free Culatra lives from fishing. Sandy lanes and the community’s slow pace feel far removed from resort Algarve.

We stopped for a cold beer at Bar do Tiago, near Praia do Farol, an ideal relaxed break before returning to the boat.

Swimming at Ilha Deserta
This stop justified the entire excursion. The bay had clear water and enough peace to forget we were in one of Europe’s busiest tourist regions.

- Price: about €25 per person.
- Duration: two hours; choose three if time permits.
- Highlight: swimming at Ilha Deserta and Bar do Tiago’s atmosphere.
- Remember: snacks, water and an international, mostly English-speaking group.
Is the water too cold?
The Atlantic remains refreshingly cold despite Algarve heat. We visited in September. By our standards the water was chilly, but on a hot day that shock made the Ilha Deserta swim the highlight.
| Month | Average water | Sensation |
|---|---|---|
| June | 18–19°C | Fresh to cold |
| July | 19–20°C | Refreshing |
| August | 20–22°C | Most pleasant |
| September | 20–21°C | Ideal with warm air |
Is Olhão worth visiting?
Definitely. Travelers looking for an Algarve with more soul, fewer queues and less polished nature should add Olhão. The Ria Formosa boat tour was the perfect centerpiece and offered strong value without the mass-tourism feeling we found elsewhere.
We booked through Passeios Ria Formosa.
