After exploring the Ponta da Piedade caves by private boat, we hiked above the cliffs from historic Lagos to see the same coast from a completely different angle.
Lagos cliff walk: Praia da Batata to Ponta da Piedade
The trail from historic Lagos to Ponta da Piedade is essential for nature lovers who are comfortable with heights. We completed the route and learned exactly where the effort pays off.
Beaches, viewpoints and distances
1. Praia dos Estudantes
Only 200 meters from the center and reached through a rock tunnel beside Praia da Batata. Its famous “Roman Arch” is actually a masonry bridge once connecting the cliff to a fortress on a small islet.
2. Praia do Pinhão
At 600 meters total, this wilder beach sits beneath high cliffs. Its access stairs are steep and narrow, so we only viewed it from above.

3. Praia da Dona Ana
At 1.2 km, the beach frequently appears in “world’s best” lists. Large rock formations rise from the water. Beyond here, pavement gives way to a dry, rocky clifftop path with the best panoramas over Lagos Bay.

4. Praia do Camilo
This was the one beach where we chose to descend and climb back up. We were not in peak athletic form, so that was strategic. The iconic wooden staircase has 225 steps, and yes, it was absolutely worth it.

5. Praia da Boneca
At roughly 2.5 km, this small cove follows Camilo as the clifftop route continues winding south.
6. Ponta da Piedade
The total route is roughly 3.5–4 km, depending on viewpoint detours. The lighthouse and modern Ponta da Piedade boardwalks mark the finale.
- Walking time: 2½–3 hours at a slow pace, with photos and the Camilo descent.
- Difficulty: moderate; the Dona Ana to Camilo section is the roughest.
- Accessibility: the boardwalk area itself is flat and accessible. Visitors with limited mobility can take an Uber directly there.
Ponta da Piedade by land or sea?
After doing both, our answer is simple: they complement each other. A private boat took us inside caves and close to the rocks. The hike revealed the true scale of the Algarve from above.

The boat gives intimacy with the sea; the trail gives the horizon. If possible, do not choose between them. We skipped the cave staircase because we had already seen sea level by boat.
How we found a private boat bargain
Near Lagos’s craft market beside the canal, we happened upon small family operators. We negotiated a private trip for only Alice and me at €25 each, paid in cash.

The result was almost three hours with a friendly captain who calmly entered every opening and cave. In Albufeira we paid nearly twice as much for a group experience that was nowhere near as personal.
Where to eat
O Camilo is famous but, in our opinion, overpriced and not worth the hype. Sol Nascente was a simpler, honest stop for draft beer and snacks after three hours in the sun.
We surrendered to Uber
The trail is exposed and Algarve sun can be relentless. We chose a cloudy day, then a downpour arrived at the finish. Exhausted and soaked, we took an Uber from Ponta da Piedade back to central Lagos for roughly €5–€8.
Verdict: is it worth it?
Absolutely. This trail is excellent exercise and one of the coast’s best visual experiences. If time is short, a direct ride to the boardwalk is faster. If you have room in the itinerary, walk the full route.
We prefer putting hikes and adventure activities near the end of a trip so an injury does not ruin everything that follows. A cloudy day was perfect: cooler walking weather and a completely different view from our boat experience. It was a memorable way to say goodbye to Lagos.
