We planned to see an Instagram-famous cave and instead found the day's real treasure nearby. This Lagos-to-Albufeira trip mixes dolphins, a rough Zodiac ride, Benagil disappointment and a spectacular beach finale.

A relaxed start from Lagos

We did not jump out of bed at 6 am. After a proper breakfast in Lagos, we drove to Albufeira Marina. In the second half of September, prices had eased and August crowds were gone.

  • Distance: roughly 60 km or 45–50 minutes via the A22.
  • Booking: reserve online in peak season. In September, we arrived and booked the next available departure without trouble.

Dolphins, caves and a rough Zodiac ride

We chose Seacret Tours on a fast Zodiac-style boat with saddle seats.

Group aboard the Zodiac tour

⚠️ If you have back problems or dislike hard impacts, choose another vessel. The Zodiac flies over waves. It is exciting, but comfort is practically zero.

We were the only Brazilians among German, British and French passengers. The guide happened to be Brazilian, although the main commentary was in English.

  • Duration: about two hours.
  • Price: approximately €40–€45 per person.
  • Dolphins: the highlight. They came close and played in the wake, making the price worthwhile.

Benagil: Instagram versus reality

After the dolphins, we visited the caves and Benagil Cave. Honestly, it disappointed us.

Busy boat visit to Benagil

Internet photos look empty and magical. In reality, boats queue like traffic. To protect the site, motorboats cannot land inside; you look from the vessel and leave. Kayaks and SUPs are the options for reaching the sand. Compared with our intimate Ponta da Piedade boat trip in Lagos, this felt like industrial tourism.

Praia da Marinha stole the day

From the boat we noticed a special-looking beach and stopped there while returning to Lagos. I had read about Praia da Marinha but felt lazy because great beaches already sat outside our Airbnb. That would have been a mistake: Marinha is another level.

Praia da Marinha

Its limestone cliffs formed about 20 million years ago. The famous M-shaped arch, sea stacks and natural sinkholes create the kind of landscape that needs no inflated adjective. During golden hour, yellow and orange rock seems to light up.

How cold is the water?

Travelers used to northeastern Brazil or Rio will feel the difference.

Month Average water What it feels like
June 18–19°C Cold and bracing
July 20–21°C Better, especially on a hot day
August 21–22°C The most comfortable month
September 20–21°C Summer warmth remains, cooler breeze outside

In September, hot sun and fresh water felt invigorating. Once our bodies adjusted, the clear water and fish around our feet made it hard to leave.

Praia da Marinha verdict

Parking is large, but a long wooden staircase keeps the beach relatively wild. There is a support bar, although the real point is quiet and scenery. This was the most relaxing moment of our six Algarve days.

Praia da Marinha: 5/5. If you must choose between the boat trip and an entire afternoon here, choose the beach.

Boat tour verdict

Dolphin and cave tour: 3.5/5. The dolphins save the score; the caves feel overly industrial. Marine-life lovers will enjoy it, but Benagil is not the untouched paradise shown online.

Wear secure shoes for Marinha’s stairs and bring water. The Algarve is beautiful, but this was where our minds truly slowed down.
