Los Rápidos is a narrow section of Bacalar Lagoon where a gentle current creates a natural floating route through crystal-clear water.
What is Los Rápidos?
Los Rápidos is a narrow channel connecting sections of Bacalar Lagoon. The gentle current carries swimmers through exceptionally clear water, making it ideal for floating, paddling and relaxing.

The site is also surrounded by fragile stromatolites. These living formations must never be stepped on, touched or used as seats.
Best time to visit
November through April generally brings lower humidity and less rain, but it is also the busiest period. Summer is hotter and wetter.
Arrive near opening time for easier parking, quieter water and less heat. Midday groups can make the narrow floating route feel crowded.
Location and access
Los Rápidos lies south of Bacalar town and is easiest to reach by car or taxi. Confirm the return ride if using a taxi because vehicles may not wait nearby.

Parking is available but fills during popular periods. The final access road and conditions can change after heavy rain.
What to do
- Enter upstream and float with the current.
- Rent a kayak if available and paddle without approaching stromatolites.
- Swim in designated areas.
- Relax in hammocks or seating beside the lagoon.
- Eat at the on-site restaurant.

The current is usually gentle, but weak swimmers and children should use life jackets. Always follow staff instructions.
Facilities and services
The property normally provides restrooms, changing areas, restaurant service, seating and equipment rentals. Facilities are comfortable rather than luxurious, matching our four-star rating.

Food prices reflect the captive location, but the menu and service were reasonable. Outside food policies should be checked before arriving.
Tickets and hours
Admission prices, opening times and rental fees can change. Check the official site directly rather than relying on an older blog or social-media screenshot. Some periods require advance booking.
Important tips
- Do not wear ordinary sunscreen, oils or creams before entering the lagoon.
- Never stand on stromatolites.
- Bring a towel, water shoes and dry clothes.
- Use a waterproof phone case.
- Keep valuables out of sight.
- Arrive early and avoid holiday weekends when possible.
Verdict
Los Rápidos is worth visiting. Natural beauty earned five stars, while facilities, access, service and value earned four. It is commercial enough to be convenient without erasing the lagoon experience.

The essential rule is simple: float, enjoy the water and leave the stromatolites untouched so the place survives its own popularity.
