Kantun-Chi combines several cenotes and an underground river in one park. We chose Grutaventura to save travel time during five days in Playa del Carmen.

Why cenotes make Yucatán special

Cenotes are natural openings into the limestone aquifer beneath the Yucatán Peninsula. Some are open pools, others sit inside caves, and many were culturally important to the Maya.

Cenote at Kantun-Chi

Their clear, cool water creates a completely different experience from Caribbean beaches.

Why we chose Kantun-Chi

During five days in Playa del Carmen, we wanted to experience several cenotes without driving between unrelated sites. Kantun-Chi Ecopark brings multiple pools and a guided underground river into one organized complex.

Entrance to Kantun-Chi

Its location south of Playa del Carmen is straightforward, and the packaged format suited a family outing.

What the experience includes

Kantun-Chi offers different access levels. Basic options cover selected cenotes, while more complete packages add a guided cave and underground-river experience.

Available packages

Names, inclusions and prices change, so check the official site. Compare:

  • How many cenotes are accessible.
  • Whether the underground river is included.
  • Guided or self-guided format.
  • Equipment, lockers, food and transport.
  • Age or mobility restrictions.

Reservations and payment

Booking online can secure availability and may provide a better rate. Save confirmation offline and verify the cancellation policy. At the park, clarify whether a deposit is required for lockers or equipment.

Our package: Grutaventura

We selected Grutaventura because it combined cenote swimming with the underground river. This optimized our limited time and gave the day a clear progression rather than a series of similar swimming stops.

Underground experience

Facilities

The park was organized, with changing areas, lockers, restrooms, safety equipment and staff guiding visitors between activities. That structure is one reason families may prefer Kantun-Chi over an isolated roadside cenote.

The trade-off is price. You pay for convenience, equipment and a managed environment rather than only access to water.

What we liked most

  • Excellent facilities and equipment.
  • Beautiful cenotes with different shapes and light.
  • Easy access from the Riviera Maya.
  • Professional, attentive staff.
  • The underground river made the package feel complete.

Family experience in the cenote

What we did not like

Food and drinks were the weakest part relative to the price. Package timing also reduces flexibility, because guided groups move together.

Meal area at Kantun-Chi

Visitors seeking a cheap, spontaneous swim can find simpler cenotes. Kantun-Chi makes more sense when convenience and variety justify the premium.

What to bring

  • Swimsuit and towel.
  • Water shoes with good grip.
  • Dry clothes.
  • Waterproof camera or phone protection.
  • Cash or card for extras and deposits.

Do not apply ordinary sunscreen, creams or oils before entering. Cenote water is part of a fragile underground system. Shower first and follow the park’s environmental rules.

Verdict

Yes, Kantun-Chi was worth it for our family. Facilities, access, service and natural beauty were excellent. Food and price prevented a perfect score, but the four-star overall rating reflects a well-organized experience.

Choose it if you want several cenotes and an underground river without coordinating multiple locations. If budget matters more than convenience, a smaller independent cenote may offer better value.
