Planning to hike in Madeira? Here is how to reserve classified PR trails through SIMplifica, what the 2026 fees cost and what to check before leaving.

Do you really need to book hiking trails in Madeira?

If Instagram and TikTok are your only references, Madeira can look like a place where you simply park, lace up your boots and start walking. In 2026, it is no longer that simple.

Alice and I visited Madeira during the first week of September 2025. We hiked some of the island’s busiest routes and saw what rarely fits into a 15-second video: queues at narrow passages, difficult parking and people arriving without knowing whether the trail was open.

To control visitor numbers, fund maintenance and reduce risk, the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) requires advance reservations for classified walking routes, identified by a PR code. Bookings use timed entry on SIMplifica and most visitors must pay.

The practical rule is easy: if a trail has a PR code, check its status, book before leaving your accommodation and save the ticket offline.

Updated in August 2026: prices, schedules and conditions can change. Check the official trail status and confirm your booking through SIMplifica Madeira.

What changed on Madeira’s trails?

Until mid-2024, hikers could normally choose a route and start walking. On narrow levadas, large groups moving in opposite directions created human traffic jams. Cars and buses spilled onto roadsides at Pico do Arieiro and Fanal, while heavy use accelerated erosion and damaged safety equipment.

The current IFCN system brings three important changes:

  • Active checks: staff may verify the QR code at trail entrances.
  • Conservation funding: fees support maintenance, cleaning, signs and protective structures.
  • Real penalties: entering a classified route without a valid reservation is an offence. Access can be refused and a fine may apply.

Madeira hiking fees in 2026

These are the IFCN rates published for 2026. Prices are per person and every booking remains subject to time-slot availability.

Booking Independent visitor Registered operator
One trail, except PR1 €4.50 €3.00
PR1 to Pedra Rija viewpoint and back €4.50 €3.00
Complete PR1, Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo €10.50 €7.00
Two or more trails on one day, excluding PR1 €9.00 €6.00
Combined trails over 3 days, excluding PR1 €22.50 €15.00
Combined trails over 7 days, excluding PR1 €52.50 €35.00

SIMplifica calculates whether separate tickets or a combined 1, 3 or 7-day rate is cheaper. It is not an open pass: you must still reserve every route and entry time.

Madeira residents and children aged 12 or younger do not pay. People with a disability of at least 60% and one legal guardian may also qualify for an exemption. Registration and reservations are still required.

Pico do Arieiro, PR1

This is Madeira’s most dramatic mountain scenery, with a path cut into volcanic rock above the clouds.

Hiking at Pico do Arieiro in Madeira

Sunrise is the difficult part because the viewpoint fills before 7 a.m. Since May 1, 2026, the section beyond Pedra Rija operates one way from Pico do Areeiro toward Pico Ruivo. Hikers exit via PR1.1 or PR1.2, and IFCN does not provide transportation back to the original parking area. Organize the return before booking.

Check the IFCN PR1 reopening and one-way notice, then read our honest Pico do Arieiro experience.

Levada do Caldeirão Verde, PR9

Walking the Levada do Caldeirão Verde in Madeira

The route follows a historic irrigation channel through dense green cliffs and four dark tunnels. Bring a headlamp or a fully charged phone. The path is extremely narrow, so the 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. rush can become frustrating. We started at 8:15 a.m. and reached the waterfall before the biggest groups.

Ponta de São Lourenço, PR8

Exploring the Ponta de São Lourenço trail in Madeira

This exposed coastal trail has almost no shade. Sunscreen, water and wind protection are essential. Near Casa do Sardinha, you can sometimes return by boat or swim at the pebble beach, but those services should never replace a safe walking plan.

Fanal Forest

Mist and free-roaming cattle in Madeira’s Fanal Forest

Fanal’s ancient Laurissilva trees and shifting fog are unforgettable, but this protected landscape is not a photo set. Stay off exposed roots, park only in designated areas and keep your distance from free-roaming cattle.

Did the reservation system improve the experience?

Capacity limits and dedicated maintenance revenue are sensible improvements. The frustrating parts are a portal that can slow down during busy periods, weak mobile coverage at trailheads and a rigid time slot on an island famous for microclimates.

I do not enjoy paying for every activity or planning a holiday in 30-minute blocks. Still, paying €4.50 is preferable to finding a damaged or closed trail. The bigger weakness is flexibility when weather changes quickly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reschedule or receive a refund if it rains?

Not simply because you decide the weather looks poor. IFCN allows rebooking or refunds when authorities officially close or restrict the route on your booking date. A wrong date, personal cancellation or voluntary weather decision generally means losing the fee.

What happens if I hike without a reservation?

You may be refused entry, asked to regularize the booking or receive the applicable fine. Risking an entire day to save €4.50 makes little sense.

Are any Madeira trails still free?

Yes. The fee covers classified routes managed or regulated by IFCN, not every path or levada on the island. A free route can still be closed, restricted or poorly maintained, so always check its condition.

Are there toilets and drinking water along the trails?

Most routes have little or no infrastructure. Carry your own water, food and rubbish. Rabaçal and Ponta de São Lourenço have limited support facilities, but opening hours vary and there are no dependable public drinking-water taps along the route.

Before leaving your accommodation
