An unplanned April detour became a British Columbia highlight: the cinematic Vancouver-to-Squamish road, green valleys beneath snowy peaks and a suspension bridge that we preferred to Capilano.
An unplanned British Columbia detour
A Flair Airlines deal from Montreal took us to Vancouver over the April Easter holiday. Sea to Sky Gondola was not in our original plan because it consumes at least half a day. A local friend insisted, and he was right: it became a highlight of our first BC trip.
Highway 99 is part of the experience
The drive from Vancouver to Squamish is worth the day by itself. Howe Sound follows the road through cinematic scenery. As the driver, I wanted to stop at every bend but had to keep my eyes on the asphalt.
April brought solitude and snow
We visited in spring 2022. Cold weather kept many people away and the summit felt peaceful and restorative.
Halfway up, the true height becomes clear. Mountain above ocean reminded me of Madeira. Vancouver deserves its “Raincouver” nickname, but we caught full sun, bright green below and snow at the summit.
What we enjoyed and skipped
The Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge stretches 100 meters above a fjord view. For us, it was better than Capilano because it felt integrated with wild nature. Wind at the top is cold, so dress properly.
At Summit Lodge Deck, coffee or craft beer in the sun with that horizon is the peak of the visit. We skipped Spirit Trail because we lacked time and proper boots, though it is normally the easiest summit walk.
Prices and access in 2026
- Adults aged 19–64: roughly CAD $69–$75.
- Advance online tickets generally save CAD $5–$10.
- Visitor parking at the Highway 99 base is large and free.
- The gondola is highly secure, but people afraid of heights will feel the scale.
Verdict
For nature lovers, this is essential. It is not inexpensive, but it delivers British Columbia’s mountains, ocean and snow in a few hours. We would return in summer simply to watch the landscape change.
