Au Canot Volant combines a self-guided forest hike with a downstream kayak route. Equipment, briefing and shuttle are included.
A Quebec summer half-day in Saint-Côme
About 90 minutes from Montreal, Au Canot Volant offers a simple combination: hike through the forest, then paddle downstream on the L’Assomption River.

The Rando-Canot format suits couples, families and beginners who want activity without committing to a full day or serious whitewater.
Quick facts
- Roughly 5 km of hiking.
- Approximately 6 km by kayak or canoe.
- Allow about half a day.
- Equipment, briefing and shuttle are included.
- Reservations are recommended.
Best time and water temperature
The season normally runs from late spring through early fall, subject to river conditions. Summer offers warmer water, while weekends and holidays are busier.
After heavy rain, current and water level can change. Confirm operations directly before driving from Montreal.
Booking
Use the official website and select the activity, boat type, date and group size. The online system was functional but not especially intuitive, which explains our three-star booking score.
Arrive early enough for check-in, equipment fitting and the safety briefing.
How Rando-Canot works
Staff provide instructions and direct participants onto the hiking route. After approximately five kilometers, you reach the river equipment and begin the six-kilometer downstream section. The transport arrangement returns participants according to the operator’s current procedure.

Confirm the sequence when checking in, because river level and logistics may alter the operation.
What to bring
- Closed hiking shoes.
- Water and a snack.
- Quick-drying clothes and a change for afterward.
- Sunscreen, hat and insect repellent.
- Waterproof phone protection.
- A strap for glasses.
Expect to get wet, even on a calm section of river.
Our experience
The hike
The trail was scenic and manageable, with enough elevation and uneven terrain to feel like a real walk without becoming exhausting.

On the river
The L’Assomption section was refreshing and beginner-friendly. Small faster passages added interest, but this was not a high-adrenaline rafting experience. That is why adrenaline received three stars while the overall outing earned four.

Staff were courteous and bilingual, and the combination of hiking and paddling prevented the activity from feeling repetitive.
Tips
- Choose an early time for quieter trails and easier parking.
- Check water conditions after storms.
- Secure every item before entering the kayak.
- Bring food for after the activity, since the region is rural.
- Combine Saint-Côme with another Lanaudière stop only if you are not rushing.
Who should choose it?
It is well suited to active beginners, couples and families comfortable around water. It is not ideal for anyone expecting intense rapids, luxury facilities or a completely effortless outing.
Safety
Wear the flotation device correctly, listen to the briefing and remain within the operator’s route. Children and weak swimmers should follow all restrictions. Conditions can change even on a generally easy river.
Verdict
Yes, Au Canot Volant is worth the drive for a balanced half-day near Montreal. The outing offers strong value, friendly service and beautiful scenery. Treat it as accessible outdoor exploration rather than an adrenaline challenge, and expectations will match the experience.
