Cancún opens the door to the Riviera Maya, but customs disputes, unclear fees and aggressive transportation sales can create stress before the holiday begins.
Paradise does not always begin at arrivals
The Riviera Maya offers turquoise water, Maya ruins, resorts and cenotes. Cancún Airport, however, can introduce the trip with unclear customs decisions, aggressive salespeople and transportation confusion.
Most travellers pass without a serious problem. The purpose of this article is preparation, not panic.
Customs and additional electronics
Mexican customs rules distinguish personal effects from goods that may be taxed. Travellers carrying multiple laptops, tablets, cameras or new boxed electronics may be questioned and assessed duties.
Rules and allowances can change. Before flying, consult official Mexican customs guidance and keep purchase evidence for valuable equipment.
Luggage size can affect attention
Large quantities of luggage and visibly new products can attract more scrutiny. That does not make an assessment legitimate or illegitimate by itself, but travelling with only what you need reduces misunderstandings.
Remove unnecessary packaging, distribute personal belongings sensibly and never hide or falsely declare an item.
Arbitrary valuations and charges
The most frustrating reports involve officers assigning a value without clear documentation or applying a charge that travellers do not understand. Language barriers and the desire to leave quickly increase pressure.
Ask calmly:
- Which rule applies?
- How was the value calculated?
- Where should payment be made?
- Will an official receipt be provided?
Pay only through an official process. Do not hand cash to an individual without documentation. If you believe a decision is wrong, request a supervisor and record names, time and location when safely possible.

Check the current information from Mexico’s customs authority, tax administration and your airline before departure. Screenshots or saved PDFs can help when mobile service is unreliable, but they do not replace respectful cooperation with officials.
No receipt means no transparent process
An official tax or fine should produce documentation. The absence of a receipt makes it difficult to verify or contest the transaction later. Insist politely on written proof.
Inspections are unpredictable
Two travellers with similar luggage may have completely different experiences. Random inspection systems, officer discretion and crowded arrival periods make enforcement feel inconsistent.
Our experience
We travelled with discreet luggage and did not carry unnecessary new electronics. We passed through without the problems described by other visitors, but luck was certainly part of it.
The fact that our arrival was smooth does not erase credible patterns reported by travellers. Tourists are easy targets because they are tired, unfamiliar with the rules and afraid of missing prepaid transportation.
The sales gauntlet after customs
Once you leave customs, you may be approached by people offering taxis, transfers, rental cars, tours or “information.” Some are timeshare representatives presenting themselves as airport assistance.
If transport is pre-booked, continue to the exact meeting point in the confirmation. Do not show your voucher to every person who asks and do not accept claims that your company has closed or your driver is unavailable without contacting the provider directly.
Airport taxis are expensive and ride-hailing access has changed over time. Verify the current pickup rules before travelling.
Departure and the unclear tourism tax
Quintana Roo has applied the Visitax tourism charge to international visitors. Confusion arises when travellers do not know whether it applies, whether it was included elsewhere or which website is official.
Use only official government channels. Be cautious with look-alike websites charging service fees, and retain proof of payment. Airline staff and airport agents may provide inconsistent explanations, so verify before departure rather than at the gate.
How to reduce problems at Cancún customs
- Read current official allowances before packing.
- Carry only the electronics you genuinely need.
- Keep receipts or reasonable proof of value for expensive items.
- Avoid unopened retail packaging when items are personal belongings.
- Never make a false declaration.
- Request the legal basis and an official receipt for any charge.
- Stay calm and ask for a supervisor if the procedure is unclear.
- Pre-book reputable transportation and follow its exact instructions.
- Save confirmations and official information offline.
- Do not exchange money or buy tours from unsolicited arrivals-hall sellers.
Should you worry?
Be alert, not afraid. Millions of passengers use Cancún Airport, and most begin their holidays without a major incident. Preparation gives you the confidence to distinguish an official procedure from pressure or a sales tactic.
The Riviera Maya remains worth visiting. Know the rules, minimize ambiguity and demand documentation. That approach will not eliminate every risk, but it makes you a much harder target.
